Meaning <strong>no two people will be affected in the same way.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Since around <a href=\"https:\/\/mydisabilityjobs.com\/statistics\/neurodiversity-in-the-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>15% to 20% of the global population<\/u><\/a> is considered neurodiverse, understanding what it means and how people think can significantly benefit individuals and organisations.<\/p>\n<p>Neurodiverse people can have a range of different conditions, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)<\/strong>. The condition affects daily functioning tasks, like concentration, with many people acting on impulse without considering the consequences. It\u2019s estimated that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adhdcoaching.org\/adhdfacts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">3% to 4% of people in the UK have ADHD.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Autism (previously known as autism spectrum disorder). <\/strong>Autistic people have communication difficulties, understanding others\u2019 behaviour and intentions, and reading other people\u2019s facial expressions. According to the British Medical Association, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bma.org.uk\/what-we-do\/population-health\/improving-the-health-of-specific-groups\/autism-spectrum-disorder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>approximately 700,000 people<\/u><\/a> in the UK are diagnosed with autism.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tourette\u2019s syndrome. <\/strong>Someone with Tourette\u2019s can have sudden unwelcome and uncontrolled quick and repeated movements or vocal sounds called tics. It is an inherited condition affecting the brain, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tourettes-action.org.uk\/67-what-is-ts.html#:~:text=Tourette%20Syndrome%20%28TS%29%20is%20an%20inherited%20neurological%20condition.,adults%20are%20living%20with%20TS%20in%20the%20UK.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>over 300,000 children and adults<\/u><\/a> having the condition.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dyslexia. <\/strong>People with dyslexia have difficulties with reading, spelling, and writing. With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/dyslexia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>one in ten people<\/u><\/a> affected by the condition, daily tasks like following instructions, organisation, and time management skills are affected.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dyspraxia. <\/strong>Affecting around <a href=\"https:\/\/dyspraxiafoundation.org.uk\/what_is_dyspraxia\/dyspraxia-at-a-glance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>5% of school-aged children<\/u><\/a> and continuing into adulthood in most cases, dyspraxia is a chronic condition that affects movement and coordination. Employees with dyspraxia struggle to keep up with conversations and lack confidence in tackling new skills.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dyscalculia. <\/strong>People with dyscalculia find it challenging to perform mathematical calculations. Given that dyscalculia can accompany other developmental disorders like dyslexia and ADHD, it\u2019s unknown how many people have the condition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Bear in mind not to stereotype neurodivergent individuals<\/strong>. It defines disability as having a &#8216;physical or mental impairment&#8217; and \u201ctheir impairment has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on their ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.&#8217; Bear in mind that a disability must have lasted or will last at least 12 months.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That said, not all neurodivergent employees will consider themselves to have a disability. However, they will still fall under the Equality Act.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Reasonable workplace adjustments, like implementing new technology or allowing extra time to complete tasks, can help every employee perform their best.<\/p>\n<h2>The Benefits of a Neurodiverse Workforce<\/h2>\n<p>Worryingly, <a href=\"https:\/\/leadership.global\/resourceLibrary\/workplace-neurodiversity-the-power-of-difference.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>half of managers<\/u><\/a> are uncomfortable employing a neurodivergent candidate.
