Before covid, the number of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/employmentandlabourmarket\/peopleinwork\/employmentandemployeetypes\/articles\/characteristicsofhomeworkersgreatbritain\/september2022tojanuary2023\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">workers in the UK that had worked from home at some point during the last seven days stood at 12%. <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, even as businesses try to encourage employees back to the office, it stands at 40%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/factorialhr.co.uk\/blog\/working-from-home\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working from home<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was more of a success than anyone imagined it would be. He claimed the basis of his controversial decision was fairness: why should &#8220;people building the cars, servicing the cars, building houses, fixing houses, making the food, making all the things that people consume&#8221; have to go to work when the so-called &#8220;laptop classes&#8221; don&#8217;t?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Musk\u2019s critics defended WFH, claiming it brings flexibility and opportunities for many people, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including parents, those with care responsibilities, those who are unable or can&#8217;t afford to live in cities, and those with disabilities and allowing them to work when previously it would have been impossible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-105454 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/factorialhr.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/01150701\/pexels-nataliya-vaitkevich-5411997_11zon.jpg\" alt=\"man choosing to work from home and working a hybrid schedule\" width=\"1161\" height=\"774\" srcset=\"https:\/\/factorialhr.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/01150701\/pexels-nataliya-vaitkevich-5411997_11zon.jpg 2288w, https:\/\/factorialhr.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/01150701\/pexels-nataliya-vaitkevich-5411997_11zon-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/factorialhr.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/01150701\/pexels-nataliya-vaitkevich-5411997_11zon-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/factorialhr.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/01150701\/pexels-nataliya-vaitkevich-5411997_11zon-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/factorialhr.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/01150701\/pexels-nataliya-vaitkevich-5411997_11zon-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/factorialhr.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/01150701\/pexels-nataliya-vaitkevich-5411997_11zon-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1161px) 100vw, 1161px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Are These Groups Benefitting From WFH?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ONS data recorded between September 2022 and January 2023 found that, on top of the 40% of the workforce that had worked from home in the last seven days, 28% were hybrid, splitting their time between the office and home, and 16% of the workforce still work solely from home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the data also revealed that the highest rate of home workers were white Londoners with degrees earning over \u00a350,000 annually. <\/span><b>Working from home was slightly more prevalent in <\/b><b>parents<\/b><b> with dependent children, and there was no significant difference for people with long-term illnesses or disabilities. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Dangers of a Forced Return\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More and more businesses are ready to have people back in the office, with 54% reporting actively trying to encourage employees back in.
