Many companies didn&#8217;t utilise its full potential as they could have.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However in recent years, and especially since the covid pandemic, the contribution of HR towards overarching business strategy has massively increased.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>increased use of technology<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the ever-changing expectation of employees has seen the scope of HR teams evolve, with specific human resource strategies now being put in place in a large proportion of organisations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HR strategy is now an essential part of many businesses, with <\/span><b>more HR input being seen at the C-suite level <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from Chief People Officers and CHROs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><a id=\"enabler\"><\/a>What does it mean to be a HR Enabler?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term <\/span><b>HR enabler<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is relatively new. The literal definition of an enabler is someone who makes something possible. That could also be the perfect definition of HR within an organisation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HR leaders can\u2019t just be controllers and coordinators who organise and distribute. Instead, employees now expect a <\/span><b>strategic vision and direction<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the People team.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><a id=\"how\"><\/a>How People Teams Are Becoming Enablers<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, what do HR and People teams need to do to not be perceived as the people who get in the way, but instead be seen as enablers?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Recognise And Appreciate That The Business Revolves Around People<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s far too easy to get stuck in routines built around day-to-day processes. <\/span><b>The core focus of all HR teams should be people,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hence the shift in more and more organisations having <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This mindset can be worked into those day-to-day processes. By ensuring all company policies and guidelines put people first. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/factorialhr.co.uk\/blog\/self-management-at-work\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This <\/span><b>enables employees to focus on themselves<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and their personal performance, rather than worrying about overarching company policies that might be having a negative effect on the way they think about their work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another key aspect of enabling employees to be more positive about their role, is having <\/span><b>specific and personalised job descriptions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that are tailored to them. Depending on the industry and the size of the organisation these budgets can be quite generous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, this doesn\u2019t mean that your team is making the most of these budgets. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hrnews.co.uk\/the-importance-of-employee-learning-and-development\/\"><b>L&amp;D allowances often go untouched<\/b> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as employees feel like they don\u2019t have the time or support required to take on new courses or learning opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning should be ingrained into the organisation\u2019s culture. Individuals who continue to learn are much more likely to stay interested and engaged with their role. They are also more likely to be retained by the organisation and want to continue their upward progression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is also the fact that many people looking for new jobs now <\/span><b>expect L&amp;D opportunities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and consider it a major factor in whether or not they will even interview for a new role.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People functions can <\/span><b>enable their teams to be more engaged in the L&amp;D process<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by actively encouraging staff to make use of it. This can be in the shape of specific days set aside for L&amp;D tasks, or allowing unused budgets to roll over into the next year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Empowerment<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term <\/span><b>HR Enabler <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could be substituted for <\/span><b>HR<\/b> <b>Empowerer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Any organisation can have policies that are forward thinking and revolutionary, but if the line managers who implement them are not on board then they will invariably fall flat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Line managers need to be trained in how to enact policies, and in how to motivate and engage their teams.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They should feel confident in having constructive and honest career discussions with team members. Your team <\/span><b>needs to be able to work closely with various other teams<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in finance, IT, marketing and more, to make sure your new strategies and methods make an impact.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some organisations, especially larger ones, can be very compartmentalised with very little contact and communication between departments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the first and most important strategies you will need to have in place is how you will approach other managers in the organisation, and how you will help them to implement your vision.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Lead By Example<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><b>Lead by doing.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If your HR team has unususd L&amp;D budgets, make sure everyone takes them, including you!
